From the early morning hours of Monday, police officers from the Organised Crime Combating Unit of Northern Greece conducted a major operation in Thessaloniki. The objective was to dismantle a criminal group that specialised in tampering with DEDDIE meters.
During the operation, the prosecuting authorities proceeded with the arrest of three key members of the organisation. In total, as part of the investigation, 105 people are under investigation as perpetrators of electricity theft.
According to the data collected, members of the gang carried out specialised tampering with electrical meters of businesses and residences. Their illegal activity had extended to many regions of the country, including Attica, Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly and the Peloponnese.
The cooperation between the Hellenic Police and DEDDIE was decisive in solving the case. The damage inflicted on the Electricity Grid Operator is calculated at an amount exceeding €9 million.
The detainees were taken to the competent prosecuting authorities. An update from the Police is expected regarding the results of the operation and any additional arrests.
