The owner of a hotel complex in Vrasna, Thessaloniki, was sentenced by the Court of Appeal to one and a half years imprisonment with a three-year suspension. The case concerns the death of a four-year-old boy, who lost his life when he was crushed by a heavy metal structure.
The accident occurred in April 2019 in rental rooms that were housing refugees and migrants. The child, accompanied by two friends, climbed onto a sliding door approximately four metres in length and weighing more than one hundred kilogrammes, playing. As the structure moved, the mechanical parts holding it gave way, causing it to collapse and fall on the minor.
The victim sustained head and brain injuries that proved fatal. The defendant had denied the charge, arguing that the door was in good condition. However, the court found that the sliding structure was not adequately maintained and safe.
In the first instance judgment, the convicted man had been sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment with suspension. The Court of Appeal reduced his sentence, whilst acquitting his wife. The child's parents, who had also been prosecuted, had been cleared of charges at an earlier stage of proceedings. Today the victim's family lives and works abroad.
