A 23-year-old woman from Thessaloniki was arrested following an operation by police from the Crime Prevention and Suppression Unit. The young woman is accused of participating in a ring that defrauded elderly people by impersonating accountants.
The gang's victim was an 83-year-old man. The fraudsters managed to convince him to go to a bank branch in Neapoli and withdraw €5,000. The money was to be handed over to an accomplice waiting outside the elderly man's apartment building, according to Skai.gr.
The 83-year-old proceeded to the bank, but the Immediate Action unit was alerted in time to what was happening. Police officers arrived quickly at the victim's home, where they located and arrested the young woman.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a day earlier, the same criminals had managed to take €10,000 from the elderly man along with valuable jewellery. The gang's total gain from this particular victim amounts to €15,000 plus jewellery.
The 23-year-old will be brought before the prosecutor. Authorities are searching for her remaining accomplices.
