A check on the old national road between Thessaloniki and Kavala led to the arrest of a Romanian driver. His passengers lacked legal residence permits.
Thessaloniki: Trafficker arrested with three migrants in vehicle
On Tuesday evening, officers from the Thessaloniki Foreign Affairs Directorate conducted a check on a private vehicle on the old national road connecting Thessaloniki to Kavala. During the check, it was found that the driver, a 30-year-old from Romania, was transporting three men who did not have the necessary documents for legal residence in Greece.
The three passengers were two Iranians and one Iraqi. When the officers asked them for identification, the men attempted to flee. A foot pursuit followed and they were apprehended.
According to reporting by TA NEA, the migrants had been picked up earlier that afternoon from a densely vegetated area near the Evros. As they stated, they had each paid 5,000 euros to unknown traffickers, with the aim of reaching Switzerland.
A file was opened against the 30-year-old. The vehicle, a mobile phone and a sum of money were seized.
