Thessaloniki: Three detained over arson at family home
Three people have been arrested in Thessaloniki following an arson attack on a residential property that left someone dead. The authorities have attributed serious offences to them, including intentional loss of life.
The charges they face also include participation in an armed group, explosion, arson of a residential property and illegal possession of explosives. The three — two men aged 29 and 24 and a woman aged 26 — were brought before a prosecutor on Saturday. They requested and received an adjournment to enter their plea the following week, during which time they will remain in custody.
Their transfer was carried out under strict security measures from the prosecution offices to the courts. The case file is at a preliminary stage; identification of the perpetrators will be completed by the investigating magistrate who has taken over the case.
According to the findings of investigators, the older of the two men and the woman are alleged to be the direct perpetrators of the attack. The younger man is accused of providing access to his own home, which was used as a preparation and escape base. The property in question is just metres from the scene of the incident.
The 29-year-old has previously come to the attention of the prosecution for activities in extremist circles. The 26-year-old had previously been detained in connection with a case involving arson attacks on residential properties. Following the incident on 1 July, she fled to Crete, where she was located by police officers.
Investigators believe that two different groups acted on that day in the capital, carrying out three arson attacks within a timespan of under twenty minutes. Suspects have already been arrested in connection with the first attack. Investigation into the other two, targeting members of party organisations, is ongoing.
