Thrace: Two Turkish nationals arrested for importing 50 handguns without serial numbers
Police officers from the Organised Crime Countermeasures Directorate of Northern Greece organised a coordinated operation, resulting in the arrest of two persons of Turkish nationality. The arrested individuals face charges relating to the import and trafficking of illegal weapons.
The case began following the exploitation of information and a coordinated police operation in the Thrace region. During an inspection of an international transport truck that had been identified, authorities discovered 50 handguns and 49 ammunition magazines carefully concealed within the vehicle's cab.
According to the Hellenic Police, the weapons bore no serial numbers, a fact that classifies them as so-called "ghost guns". This type of weaponry is particularly elusive and is frequently used by criminal organisations, as the lack of numbering makes it exceptionally difficult to trace their origin and distributors.
The investigation by the prosecuting authorities is now focused on identifying the network that would supply this weaponry to criminal groups operating in Greece. The authorities are also scrutinising the possible existence of a support group that may have assisted the two arrested individuals.
The Counter-Terrorism Service is examining all evidence that emerged from the case, as the findings may be connected to wider illegal weapons trafficking networks.
