Confession of mother's burial in yard — neighbours speak of complete isolation

According to the Newspaper of Editors, a woman in Marathon confessed to the authorities that she buried her mother in the yard of her home around ten years ago, in order to continue collecting her pension. Police investigations are ongoing, whilst municipal excavators have been operating at the site in the presence of police forces, although nothing has been found so far.

The prosecutor has requested the gathering of all available material to determine how the criminal proceedings should proceed. Given the lengthy time period, the chances that the body has completely decomposed are very high, whilst the investigations are expected to extend to other locations.

The case came to light following a complaint made to police by the woman's daughter — and granddaughter of the elderly woman — stating that she "has not heard news of her grandmother for a decade". The woman is reported to be living in the Marathon area with her son, who according to information is being examined to determine whether he faces psychiatric problems.

Following an investigation of EFKA records, it was established that the death of the elderly woman was never reported and that her pension continued to be paid out each month. Other neighbours reported to police that the woman was alive in 2013 and that they lost track of her since then.

A resident living across from the house described the scenes he witnessed in the morning: "Leaving for work, I saw bulldozers, police and a front-loader digging. They told us they were searching for an elderly woman in the garden. I've lived here for ten years and I had never seen her. Obviously, if something like that happened, it would have been before the decade".

The same neighbour highlighted the family's complete isolation: "Generally they had no contact with any of the neighbours. They only went out at night, and even their dog they took out at night. From what I can understand, they had some psychological issues. We are truly in shock, we don't know what is happening to us".
