Police from the Organised Crime Combat Subdirectorate of Northern Greece arrested a Turkish citizen on Monday in Thessaloniki who was sought on an Interpol red notice, according to Ta Nea.
The arrested man was sought by Turkish authorities to serve a remaining sentence of four years and 11 months, concerning weapons and drugs cases.
What is a red notice
A red notice does not constitute an international arrest warrant. It is a request to law enforcement authorities worldwide for the location and apprehension of a person, pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action.
When a red notice is issued against a person, it means that the person is wanted by the country that submitted the request or by an international court. Each Interpol member state decides whether to proceed with an arrest based on its own national legislation.
The majority of red notices are intended exclusively for use by law enforcement. Excerpts from them may be published, provided there is a relevant request from the member country — for example when public assistance is required to locate a person or when the person constitutes a potential threat to public safety.
