Counter-terrorism and prosecutor now handling case of death of 79-year-old from arson in apartment building
Three arrested for Nestor murder in Thessaloniki
Three individuals, aged 26, 29 and 24, were brought before prosecutorial authorities in Thessaloniki with serious charges related to a fatal fire in an apartment building.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 1 July. An improvised device exploded in an external space of a building where the family of MP Aphrodite Nestor resided. The 79-year-old mother of the politician lost her life in the fire that followed. The politician's father and two residents were also injured.
According to reports by Real.gr, the Hellenic Police announced that the arrests were made by officers of the Counter-Terrorism Service following intensive investigation. The perpetrators were identified through visual material, whilst genetic material was found in a common space of the building.
The 29-year-old and the 24-year-old were located in the co-capital. The younger man is accused of providing his home as a hideout — just 50 metres from the target building. The 26-year-old had fled to Chania, where she was arrested later.
The case file includes charges of intentional homicide with an aggravating element of a terrorist act, possession and use of explosive materials, arson and damage to another's property. None of the three admitted guilt.
The prosecution authorities are still seeking one more accomplice. Separately, two similar arson acts are being investigated in residences of ND officials, with the assessment that they originate from a different cell.
