Three family members have been arrested in northern Greece for defrauding elderly people through telephone calls, obtaining money through false pretences.

Police in northern Greece arrested three people — two siblings aged 27 and 32 and their 17-year-old nephew — on suspicion of defrauding elderly people through telephone calls.
In one case, the woman contacted a 65-year-old man whilst impersonating his accountant and claimed she would mediate the settlement of a debt owed to the state. Subsequently, her brother impersonated a tax official and asked the victim to collect cash and valuables, claiming he would settle the debt. The perpetrators sought to obtain €23,500, five gold sovereigns and jewellery.
Investigations by prosecuting authorities showed that on 3 June 2026 the same group had convinced an 84-year-old woman in another area of the region to give them €32,000. Additionally, another incident had occurred in the same county, in which an unknown individual who impersonated a Greek Police officer managed to obtain €80,000 from a 70-year-old by convincing him that money in his home was at risk from burglars.
During the investigations, authorities seized a car used by the group, as well as a mobile phone found in the possession of the 32-year-old woman. The local Police Directorate issued warnings to citizens on protecting themselves against similar cases.
