Three arrested for dumping industrial waste into Kifisós conduit in Aigáleo

Three men were arrested this morning by police from the Environmental Protection Division of the Police, during an operation concerning the unlawful dumping of hazardous industrial waste into a pit at a fuel station on the Kifisós bypass in Aigáleo, according to Dikastiko.gr.
The three defendants will be brought before the prosecutor tomorrow, with a file attributing serious offences to them.
Who are the three arrested
They include the driver of the tanker, of Albanian origin, aged 41, who was carrying out the unloading of the waste into the pit inside the petrol station. Two Greeks were arrested with him: the owner of the tanker, aged 46, and the co-owner of the fuel station, aged 43.
How the unlawful unloading was carried out
The tanker belonged to a waste removal company and had collected the industrial remnants from a biscuit factory. It then went to the fuel station, where other vehicles were positioned around it in order to conceal the unloading from any observers.
The driver began emptying the contents via a special tube into a stormwater conduit. Police officers from the Hellenic Police, who were monitoring the matter, then intervened, immediately stopped the procedure, and arrested the driver and the person responsible for the station on the spot.
The conduit led to the Kifisós River and the sea
A team from EYDAP was called to the scene, which established that the underground conduit led to the Kifisós River and from there to the sea. Police sources reported that this unlawful practice was being carried out systematically by the defendants.
Investigation into the extent of pollution
The case is still at the investigation stage, in order to establish how many times the offence was committed and what the extent of the environmental pollution caused is. The charges attributed to them concern violations of legislation on environmental protection, criminal environmental protection, and European waste directives, as announced by the police.
