Three arrests for telephone fraud scam involving €50,000 in Phthiotis
Police in Phthiotis have arrested three young Roma who are suspected of defrauding residents in Thermopylae and Zeli, swindling a combined total of €50,000.
The gang contacted victims by telephone, claiming that their kitchen had a problem and risked catching fire. Using this false scenario, they persuaded victims to withdraw cash from their homes and place it at a predetermined location.
A woman in Thermopylae lost €35,000, whilst two people in Zeli lost €15,000. When the victims realised they had fallen victim to fraud, they immediately notified police.
The authorities, using data they had gathered, managed to locate the suspects in Agios Konstantinos and take them into custody.
The three arrested individuals were taken to Lamia and were granted a deadline to present their defence on Monday, 22 June.
