Three arrests over firebombing attacks in Thessaloniki
Counter-terrorism and police have made three arrests in connection with explosive device attacks on the homes of New Democracy officials, resulting in the death of Vagia Nestora.

The Hellenic Police announced that three individuals are in custody in relation to three firebombing incidents carried out on 1 July at the homes of political figures from New Democracy in the co-capital. The third attack resulted in the death of Vagia Nestora, mother of politician Aphrodite Nestora, while four other people were injured.
The Directorate for Combating Violent Crime, known as the Counter-Terrorism Service, launched a major operation early in the morning across areas of Thessaloniki and Crete. Officers made two arrests in Thessaloniki and one in Chania.
Among those arrested is a 26-year-old woman from Crete who had settled in Thessaloniki. Following the death of the unfortunate mother, the young woman went to the island to hide. The two other individuals arrested in Thessaloniki are also of young age. According to information from public television, all those arrested are connected to anarchist circles and have criminal records.
The authorities believe they are involved exclusively in the attack on the Nestora family home. The three arrested individuals are reported to have come under the scrutiny of prosecuting authorities as they had been spotted outside the family residence in the days before the attacks.
The identification and location of the perpetrators was a priority for counter-terrorism from the outset. Officers collected material from security cameras and evidence from debris of the explosive devices. At the same time, searches were being conducted in homes and other locations, and shortly before 10:00 in the morning police proceeded with the arrests.
It is recalled that the three firebombing attacks with petrol bombs took place in Thessaloniki on 1 July at the homes of Zisis Ioakeimioglou, chairman of the New Democracy governing committee in Thessaloniki, former MP Savvas Anastasiades and politician Aphrodite Nestora. During the attack on the latter's home, Aphrodite Nestora's mother was seriously injured; she succumbed to her injuries and was buried yesterday in Kozani.
Four other people were injured in the three attacks, including Aphrodite Nestora herself, who is being treated for burns to her extremities and travelled yesterday to her mother's funeral by ambulance.
