Terrorism charges for arson attack on Aphrodite Nestor's home

The indictment against four detainees for the arson attack with firebombs on the home of New Democracy MP Aphrodite Nestor has been upgraded, according to reports in To Vima. From the attack, which took place last July in Thessaloniki, the life of Vagia Nestor, the politician's mother, was lost.

The investigating magistrate handling the case has called the four accused — who are already in pre-trial detention — to give fresh statements, as the charges attributed to them have been modified. Today two of the four were presented in court, and they requested and were granted time to submit their defence statements. The remaining two will appear before the investigating magistrate the following day.

The new indictment

Judicial sources report that the modification concerns the legal characterisation of the individual acts that the four accused are said to have committed. They now face charges under paragraph 1 of article 187A of the Penal Code, which concerns terrorism offences and terrorist organisation.

These are provisions that provide for the maximum level of penalties, in the event that the accused are referred to trial and ultimately found guilty.

The four arrested

For the arson attack, the police authorities arrested a total of four individuals. A 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman are alleged to be the direct perpetrators who placed the incendiary device in the house. A 24-year-old is accused of providing the flat that was used as a base, both before and after the attack.

The authorities also arrested a 25-year-old student. According to police, the young man received the keys to the flat from the 24-year-old owner of the base and subsequently handed them over to the couple alleged to have carried out the attack.
