During the night of Sunday 21 June, the investigation into the disappearance of Stavroula Leventaki reached a successful conclusion. The 43-year-old man from North Macedonia, who had been arrested as the main suspect, ultimately confessed that he himself killed the woman. Immediately afterwards, he led police officers to the location where he had buried the victim.
According to information from ERTnews, the body was found in a rural area of Crete. The victim's brother was present at the scene, having expressed fears for the worst from the outset.
Before his confession, the accused had adopted a defiant stance towards the investigators. However, during the course of the night he changed his mind and described in detail the events of the day on which he committed the crime.
This development is considered decisive, as despite the evidence that had been gathered at the house—such as blood stains and other evidence—the absence of the body left gaps in the case file. Now, with the confession and the discovery of the corpse, the charge is significantly strengthened.
The authorities are examining multiple scenarios regarding the motives. He himself claims that there was an intense altercation beforehand, whilst other approaches on his part cannot be ruled out. The financial element does not appear to play a central role.
In the preceding days, the 43-year-old had attempted to mislead police officers with various claims that did not hold up. This tactic ultimately increased suspicion against him and accelerated the solving of the case.
The completion of the case file and the referral of the accused before the prosecutor with more serious charges is expected.
