A 46-year-old woman was arrested yesterday in Britain, appearing as a key figure in a prosecution file that had remained unknown until now concerning the arson at Marfin bank in 2010. As reported by "News", this arrest represents the latest development in a case that had been filed away by the Athens Prosecutor's Office in 2023.
The initial prosecution file had been compiled during the period 2011-2012 against four suspects for involvement in the arson, though they never went to trial. In 2016 another anti-establishment activist stood trial but was acquitted.
In 2023 a new prosecution file was compiled against four individuals, among them the woman arrested yesterday. During that period a person had been identified as the "tall, slender perpetrator" from video footage of the arson. However, the file was archived as it was deemed there was insufficient evidence.
It has now emerged that the individual identified as the "tall, slender perpetrator" had no connection to the arson. With the same physical characteristics, one of two defendants aged 42 is now identified.
The current prosecution file was compiled by the Homicides Division of the Greek Police, and three arrest warrants have been issued to date. According to information, during the period 2019-2023 the State Security Directorate attempted to gather new photographic material and testimony from an eyewitness to the arson. A computer belonging to an anarchist that had been seized in 2020 was not used at that time and was examined 3-4 years later. On it was found evidence that the defendants had gone on holiday together in 2009, with equipment that appeared in the arson videos.
