Marfin case: Denials from arrested individuals, lawyers speak out
Two people brought before a prosecutor in connection with the Marfin case deny the charges. They were granted an extension to provide their statements next Tuesday.
Their lawyer, Anna Paparousos, argued that the prosecution serves political expediency. The identification was made via an anonymous message and software used by the authorities. The defence counsel characterised the evidence as unlawful, since it cannot be verified for authenticity.
A family member of one of the arrested individuals described the circumstances of the arrest, stating that police officers broke into the residence. The family characterised themselves as quiet and uninvolved in political activities.
Survivors expressed scepticism. Maria Karagianni stated that she feels discouraged and hopes that this time the actual perpetrators will be found.
Journalist Giannis Koronaios, an eyewitness, also expressed scepticism. "After 16 years we truly hope this time the evidence will lead to the actual perpetrators, but since it is far too early, we are waiting to see how the case will develop," he said.
