Mazonnakis case: Doctor Gaka denies responsibility – Search conducted at singer's home

Gaka before investigating magistrate: "I am not responsible for my patients' choices"

The 56-year-old doctor Ioanna Gaka, remanded in custody for the 15th consecutive day, categorically denies any criminal responsibility for the death of singer Giorgos Mazonnakis. According to reports from To Vima, her statements before the investigating magistrate are shocking, as the defendant insists that she "acted in medically correct manner", whilst simultaneously admitting a series of critical omissions.

"I am not responsible for my patients' choices," she is said to have stated to the judicial officer. From her own words, however, an image emerges of significant pressure placed on the artist: the doctor admits that when he refused to pay the requested sums for the interventional procedure, she offered him the plasmapheresis session as a "gift", which ultimately caused cardiac arrest.

How she met Mazonnakis

Describing her acquaintance with the singer, Gaka mentioned a hypnotherapist named Kompianos as the connecting link: "On 7 September in the afternoon Mr Kompianos called me, who was with Mazonnakis and to whom he had gone following a recommendation from a businessman. Before that Mr Kompianos had called me to tell me that if Mazonnakis did not first undergo therapy with me, he would not take him on."

The defendant also confirmed that the singer had concerns about the financial cost of the therapy: "In Monday's telephone call I informed him of the cost of the therapy without reaching a conclusion, agreeing that he would come to the clinic the next day."

Admission regarding failure to take medical history

One of the most damaging points in her statement concerns the failure to take a medical history. Gaka shifts responsibility to the instructions of the device manufacturer: "The amount of blood circulating in the system is very small. The company says that the therapy is prohibited only in children under 12 years old and in people who do not have significant life expectancy or none at all."

Furthermore, the defendant claims that the method — which she characterises as "dual plasma filtration" — has no side effects: "I have never experienced any side effects. I am telling you consciously that if I believed there was any risk whatsoever, I would never do anything to my patients."

Critical minutes before cardiac arrest

Regarding the singer's final hours, Gaka claims that Mazonnakis was in good condition until quite a few minutes after 16:00, denying that he was administered methane. She states that at 15:46 he got up to go to the toilet and that the procedure subsequently continued normally.

This version is under investigation, as other involved persons provide a different account of the critical minutes before the cardiac arrest. The doctor also speaks of repeated cannulation failures: according to what she is said to have stated, Mazonnakis's vein ruptured three times, and she had to attempt multiple times until she located a vein in the other arm.

Subject to separate investigation remain the conditions under which the therapy was conducted, the actions that followed the deterioration of the singer's condition, and what occurred until the arrival of the ambulance service. Statements from clinic staff and other persons are being examined by the investigating magistrate.

Confrontation with the Athens Medical Association

The defendant simultaneously turned against the Athens Medical Association (AMA), questioning why during an inspection conducted at the clinic in 2025 the plasmapheresis device was not recorded: "When the AMA inspection took place the device was there and on the day of the inspection therapy was actually being conducted. I don't know why there is no report. I have not hidden the device."

The AMA, which is itself under investigation for possible omissions in inspections, is going on the counter-attack. A delegation from the Association is expected to appear on Monday before the investigating magistrate, submitting a supplementary memorandum requesting criminal prosecution of Gaka for false declaration, regarding documents from 2025 and 2026 concerning alleged ozone therapy attachments. In addition, evidence will be submitted regarding the operation of an unlicensed clinic maintained by doctors Ilias Theodoros and Ioanna Gaka on Patriarchou Ioakeim Street in Kolonaki.

Search at Mazonnakis residence – Electronic devices seized

On Friday 2 October, following orders from the investigating magistrate, police authorities conducted a search at Giorgos Mazonnakis's residence. Three mobile phones, two laptops and one tablet were seized.

The devices are to be examined by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, with the aim of recovering messages, communications and other digital data that may be related to the case. In parallel, the investigating magistrate has requested the lifting of telephone secrecy for persons who may have information concerning events that preceded and followed the singer's death.
