Mazzonakis case: Financial investigations spanning years for two doctors at Korydallos
The Independent Authority for Combating Money Laundering is conducting an in-depth investigation spanning years into the finances of the two doctors being held for Mazzonakis's death.
Money laundering investigation into Kolonaki clinic doctors
An investigation is underway by the Independent Authority for Combating Money Laundering from Criminal Activities, concerning the finances of the two temporarily detained doctors in the context of the death case of Giorgos Mazzonakis, according to Dikastiko.gr.
At the centre of the investigations, as reported by ERT News, are earlier business activities of the two accused. The Authority is utilising evidence it has collected in order to establish whether there are indications of unlawful receipt of significant sums or laundering of proceeds from punishable acts.
The financial investigations are expected to extend over many years. Official financial data will be sought, whilst the professional activity of the doctors will also be examined without breaching medical confidentiality.
The head of the Authority, retired prosecutor at the Court of Cassation Charalampos Vourliotis, has issued an order for a thorough examination of the financial details of the two doctors, should indications of money laundering emerge. If relevant findings are identified, the Authority's report will be submitted to the prosecuting authorities, whilst the possibility of asset seizure under current legislation is also provided for.
Under heightened surveillance at Korydallos
Following the decision for the temporary detention of the couple of doctors at the Kolonaki clinic on the charge of manslaughter with possible intent through omission, the accused were taken to Korydallos prison. They are being held under heightened surveillance for security reasons, whilst the co-owner of the clinic has ended the hunger and thirst strike he had announced.
The defence lawyers are preparing to challenge the temporary detention orders within the next month.
Seizure of safe and machine analysis
Meanwhile, the Greek Police conducted a house search at the residence of Giorgos Mazzonakis in the presence of a prosecutor, with the aim of collecting evidence connected with the circumstances of his death. In this context, the singer's safe was seized, which—in consultation with the competent prosecutor—will be opened or handed over to the authorities.
Particular weight is being placed on the analysis of the operation of the plasmapheresis machine, which was examined by the forensic laboratories. At the same time, results are awaited from toxicological and histological examinations, which are necessary for the completion of the forensic medical report.
