NGO "Fight Impunity" case: Allegations of secret arrest warrant against Avramopoulou
The New Left party alleges that the Citizen Protection Minister left the arrest warrant for former commissioner and current MP Dimitris Avramopoulou in abeyance for three days, as the latter is under investigation for his relationship with Pantseri's NGO.
NGO "Fight Impunity" case: Allegations of secret arrest warrant against Avramopoulou
The New Left party alleged that the government is attempting to conceal a scandal connected to the former EU commissioner and current MP of New Democracy Dimitris Avramopoulou. In a relevant statement, the opposition party characterised the politician's recent remarks as provocative and exceptionally revealing.
According to reporting by Naftemporiki, the MP failed to provide adequate explanations regarding his participation in the non-governmental organisation "Fight Impunity", which is being investigated by Greek authorities. The organisation in question, which belongs to businessman Pantseri, paid Avramopoulou a monthly sum of €5,000. During the same period, the politician allegedly maintained contact with state officials, something which according to the New Left party constitutes a conflict of interests.
Particular attention has been drawn by the revelation that there is a pending order for the apprehension of the former commissioner. The opposition accuses Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis of being aware of this document for three days, having filed it away and taking no action.
New Left submits three questions to the government: First, on what grounds Avramopoulou had meetings with officials whilst receiving remuneration from the specific NGO. Second, why Mr Chrysochoidis did not immediately activate the warrant in a case concerning public interest and involving a political figure. Third, whether the prime minister intends to retain the MP under investigation on his parliamentary group's ballot papers.
The "Fight Impunity" NGO case remains under investigation by Greek judicial and police authorities, whilst allegations of potential abuse of power and concealment of information continue to fuel political confrontation in the country.
