Former Croatian international Dario Šimić, known for his appearances for AC Milan, Inter Milan and Monaco, was arrested on Tuesday in Zagreb as part of an investigation into corruption in the tourism sector, news agency AFP reported.
Šimić is suspected of illegally obtaining a permit to operate a campsite on the Croatian Adriatic coast. The campsite in question is small, with ten plots with a capacity of up to 30 people in the town of Tisno, according to sources close to the investigation cited by news agency Hina.
Two other people have been arrested. One is a former regional tourism official who allegedly helped Šimić obtain the necessary permits, and the other is a local businessman suspected of acting as an intermediary.
Neither the police nor the specialised state prosecutor's office for combating corruption have officially confirmed the arrest, but media outlets published photographs showing Šimić in handcuffs being led out of a police vehicle, AFP reports.
Šimić began his career at Dinamo Zagreb, and then played in Italy for ten years (1998–2008). After Monaco he briefly returned to the Zagreb club. He made his debut for the Croatian national team in 1996, and at the 1998 World Cup he was an important member of the team that finished in third place. He ended his international career in 2008 with a record 100 appearances for the national team.
After his football career, he founded a company for the production of bottled water that operates across the Balkans.
