On Saturday evening on the car park of a hospitality establishment in Čakovec, a 42-year-old man drew a pistol and wounded two young men aged 23 and 28. Fortunately, both victims survived – the condition of the more seriously injured is stable and their lives are no longer in danger.
Police have still not arrested the attacker. Međimurje detectives, with help from their Varaždin colleagues, have so far spoken to dozens of people. Witness questioning continues, and it is unofficially speculated that the search could be extended to the territory of neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina and that an international arrest warrant could be issued.
Detectives also questioned the two wounded men, but the reason for the conflict remains unclear. It is suspected that it could be related to illegal drug trafficking. According to the findings of the investigating authorities, the suspect made threats and then fired shots from a firearm, thereby endangering the life of at least one other woman. An investigation is being conducted against him for two attempted murders and for endangering the lives and property of others.
People familiar with the case state that the suspect has an extensive criminal record both in his home country and abroad. In Croatia he was reported for various frauds, and later engaged in suspicious activities in neighbouring countries. In Bosnia and Herzegovina he recently served a prison sentence for illegal possession of weapons and explosives, as well as for cannabis production and sales.
Officials assume that the fugitive could attempt to cross the state border to Slovenia, Hungary or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Citizens are advised not to approach him if they spot him, but to immediately contact police on the number 192.
