In the early hours of Friday morning, around 1:30 a.m., outside a nightclub in Split, an incident occurred in which a seventeen-year-old physically attacked an eighteen-year-old, and then a police officer. During his arrest, police officers used force, and a recording of the incident appeared on social media.

According to reports in Slobodna Dalmacija, the juvenile approached two young men and attacked one of them while hurling insults. The physical assault followed, and the victim sustained minor injuries.

The Split-Dalmatia Police Directorate stated that following a report of a breach of public order, they dispatched two patrols to the scene. Officers in plain clothes arrived first and found the seventeen-year-old striking a young man who had lost consciousness from the blows. The police officers identified themselves and stopped the attack.

The attacker then attempted to flee. Officers caught up with him, but at that moment he struck one of them in the head multiple times and broke his tooth. Shortly after, a second uniformed patrol arrived, whereupon the perpetrator was subdued and arrested. The injured young man and police officer were provided with medical assistance.

The detained juvenile refused medical assistance and a breathalyser test, but according to police assessment, he was visibly intoxicated. A criminal investigation has been initiated against him on suspicion of violent behaviour and coercion of a public official.

Given that the recording showed the use of force by police officers, an internal investigation has been announced. Police confirmed that they will conduct an investigation in cooperation with the state prosecution and determine any potential disciplinary responsibility of the officers.

All the circumstances of the incident will become clearer once the investigation is completed.
