Indian man smuggled migrants near Rijeka, caused accident while fleeing police
A 28-year-old Indian citizen was arrested after a motorway pursuit on the A6 highway in which he caused a traffic accident. Police propose a fine of €6,870.
Motorway chase on A6, fake number plates and four injured
Rijeka police have filed criminal charges against a 28-year-old Indian citizen who on 27 August in the afternoon attempted to flee from police on the A6 motorway while transporting illegal migrants, causing a traffic accident in the process, according to 24sata.
The suspect was driving a private vehicle with Belgian registration plates when police officers attempted to stop him. He ignored their signals and continued driving at increased speed towards Rijeka. At the Kikovica toll station, he did not stop but drove through the lowered barrier next to the police officers waiting for him there.
On the Svilno viaduct, driving at an inappropriate speed, he collided with a private vehicle with Rijeka registration plates driven by a 49-year-old Croatian citizen. In the accident, three foreign nationals whom the suspect was illegally transporting were lightly injured, as was the 49-year-old driver himself.
After the collision, the Indian man exited the vehicle and continued to flee on foot. Police officers soon located and arrested him.
The criminal investigation established that he had attached number plates that did not belong to the vehicle. He is charged with, for a predetermined sum of money and with the aim of achieving unlawful material gain, transporting foreign nationals to an agreed destination.
Police from the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Police Administration reported him for the criminal offences of forgery of documents and illegal entry, movement and residence in the Republic of Croatia and other European Union states and signatories to the Schengen Agreement.
With regard to the foreign nationals, procedures were applied in accordance with the Law on International and Temporary Protection and the Law on Foreigners. The suspect was handed over to a custody supervisor at the competent state prosecutor's office together with the criminal charges.
In addition to criminal charges, the suspect was also sanctioned administratively on the basis of the Road Traffic Safety Act. In its charging proposal, police proposed to the competent court the imposition of a fine of €6,870.
