Twenty-two-year-old Irish national Rory Byrne was brought in on Saturday evening in Novalja following a physical altercation with police. He was remanded in custody on suspicion of coercion against a public official.

Twenty-two-year-old Irish national Rory Byrne was brought in on Saturday evening in Novalja following a physical altercation outside a hospitality establishment. Police received a report of a public order disturbance and attended the scene.
According to a report obtained by Index from the Lika-Senj Police Administration, during the intervention the young man threw an object at an intervention police officer. The object missed the official and struck a police vehicle. He then continued to assault the officers with his hands and fists.
A breathalyser test conducted on him showed 1.73 per mille, and a drug test was also positive. He was arrested following the use of force.
During the criminal investigation it was established that he suffers from type 1 diabetes. Police claim he was allowed to call a friend who brought him insulin, and officers took him to A&E twice to receive treatment.
Following completion of the investigation he was handed over to the custody supervisor, and the prosecution requested remand in custody. The County Court in Zadar approved the measure, and he was placed in Zadar Prison. The Ministry of Justice confirmed that he was admitted on Monday with his own insulin and was allowed to take his medication.
Byrne's family claim he was not provided with appropriate medical care and are calling for his transfer to hospital. Irish representative Conor McGuinness has requested urgent consular intervention. Croatian police state that the young man waived his right to consular assistance under the Vienna Convention.
