The Supreme Criminal Court of Croatia has definitively upheld a seven-year prison sentence for former general Branimir Glavaš for war crimes committed in 1991 against Serbian civilians in Osijek.

The Supreme Criminal Court of Croatia has upheld a seven-year prison sentence for former general Branimir Glavaš for war crimes committed in 1991 against Serbian civilians in Osijek. The verdict has thereby become final – reports MTI based on Wednesday reports from Croatian media.
The court rejected appeals from both the prosecution and the defendants, and upheld the first-instance verdict of the county court in Zagreb. The court made its decision on 18 February 2026, but it was only published on Wednesday.
According to the indictment, Glavaš was responsible in 1991 in Osijek for the operations of a unit that kidnapped, tortured and killed Serbian civilians. The victims were bound with adhesive tape, their mouths sealed, and then killed and thrown into the Drava river. Because of this, the case is known in Croatian public as the "Adhesive tape" case.
Three other defendants were also found guilty. Gordana Getos Magdić, the former commander of one special sabotage and reconnaissance unit in the Osijek war zone, was sentenced to four years in prison. Dinko Kontić and Zdravko Dragić, former members of this unit, each received three years. Time spent in previous detention and imprisonment is credited against the sentences.
Glavaš was an influential politician in the right-wing Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) of the late president Franjo Tuđman. He was expelled from the party in 2005, after which he founded the Croatian Democratic Union of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB). He was a member of parliament for nine terms, and submitted his mandate in 2016.
The former general was already convicted in the same case in 2009, but the Constitutional Court of Croatia nullified the final verdict in January 2015 and the proceedings had to be repeated. By then, Glavaš had served a significant portion of his sentence in prisons in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The repeated proceedings began in 2017, and in October 2021 it was restarted from the beginning. The county court in Zagreb, in its first-instance verdict of 27 October 2023, sentenced Glavaš to seven years in prison.
