Fake stockbroker defrauds Požega man of over €15,000

Man from Požega victim of investment fraud, defrauded of €15,000

A 59-year-old from the Požega area transferred over €15,000 to a person who falsely claimed to be an employee of a stock trading company, reports 24sata. He reported the fraud to police on Tuesday, 1 September.

From May to September of this year, the victim transferred money on several occasions to different bank accounts, believing he was investing through a legitimate stock trading platform. An unknown person misled him through falsely presenting facts, according to a police statement.

Police are conducting a criminal investigation, and a criminal complaint will be forwarded to the competent state prosecutor's office.

Following the case, police have warned citizens to exercise caution when unknown persons offer quick and secure earnings through investment by telephone, via social media, internet advertisements or other channels. Citizens are advised not to believe promises of large profits without risk, not to transfer money to accounts of unknown persons, and not to allow remote access to their devices.

Before making any investment, it is recommended to verify whether the company or platform is authorised to provide investment services. Those who suspect they have become victims of fraud are advised by police to immediately inform both the police and their bank.
