Bulgarian arrested after attempted fraud of 79-year-old woman in Osijek

Osijek police have arrested a 23-year-old Bulgarian national suspected of multiple frauds against elderly women, reports Index.hr. Police have also linked him to an earlier case in which a 78-year-old woman was defrauded of €10,000.

On Monday at around 18:30, the suspect called a 79-year-old woman on her home telephone, introduced himself as a doctor and told her that her daughter had broken her leg. He persuaded her that her daughter would only be able to walk again if she immediately gave him money for treatment.

The woman believed him and handed over €260 and gold jewellery at her doorstep. The total estimated value was approximately €765. When he demanded additional money, the woman became suspicious of fraud and informed the police.

Officers soon found and arrested him. A search of the car and room he was using, carried out on the basis of a court order, resulted in the discovery of money and gold jewellery suspected of originating from criminal offences — all of which was seized.

Following the completion of the investigation, the 23-year-old was handed over to the custody supervisor of the Osijek-Baranja Police Administration.
