Doctor in Dalmatia issued health certificates without examinations, three suspects arrested in Split
Split police apprehended a 75-year-old doctor, 79-year-old psychologist and 40-year-old employee over false health certificates. The doctor is suspected of at least 14 criminal offences of abuse of position.
Private practice in Split-Dalmatia County: health certificates for payment, without examination
Split police have apprehended three suspects — a 75-year-old doctor, 79-year-old psychologist and 40-year-old employee of a private specialist practice — on suspicion of issuing medical certificates to people who never underwent the necessary examinations, Večernji list reports.
According to police statements, the doctor issued health certificates from his private practice in the Split-Dalmatia County area from December last year until 19 May this year without previously conducting examinations. These included, among other things, certificates for drivers and driving licence candidates and for members of ship, boat and yacht crews.
Police believe the doctor issued the certificates for financial gain. According to investigators' suspicions, a 40-year-old practice employee was also involved in the entire scheme: the doctor allegedly asked her to prepare and certify certificates for athletes who had not undergone the necessary examinations, which she did knowingly, police claim.
The investigation revealed at least two cases involving the 79-year-old psychologist. It is suspected that the doctor and psychologist together issued certificates to vessel crew members without conducting medical examinations and psychological assessments. The doctor is suspected of at least 14 criminal offences of abuse of position and authority, and the same charges are being brought against the psychologist and the practice employee.
During the investigation, the practice, homes and vehicles of all three suspects were searched, and confiscated documentation continues to be reviewed, so the investigation is not yet complete. The two men were handed over to pre-trial supervision following questioning, whilst a criminal report against the 40-year-old woman will be submitted to the competent state prosecutor's office.
