Thanks to international cooperation through ENFAST, Croatian police arrested a 53-year-old Hungarian in Zadar who had been sentenced to a multi-year prison sentence for tax fraud and forgery of private documents.
The individual in question was H. O. B., who had been sentenced in Hungary to a lengthy prison term with final legal force. Furthermore, the Hungarian National Tax and Customs Authority had issued a European arrest warrant against him in connection with another procedure for budget fraud and forgery of private documents.
The Hungarian National Investigation Service (KR NNI) was conducting an investigation into fugitive Hungarians hiding abroad. During the investigation, they discovered that the suspect might be hiding in Croatian territory. Through ENFAST (European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams), they established contact with Croatian investigators.
The Croatian side, in cooperation with the Police Directorate in Zadar, determined the exact location where H. O. B. was staying. On 26 May, police officers arrested him in Zadar itself. During the apprehension, he attempted to evade arrest using forged documents, which led Croatian authorities to initiate criminal proceedings against him.
The extradition process to Hungarian authorities is still ongoing. ORFK BF NEBEK will participate in organising the handover of the suspect to the jurisdiction of Hungarian judicial authorities.
