On Tuesday shortly before four in the afternoon, a patrol spotted a young man at the wheel of a BMW five-series with city registration plates in Velika Kosnica. He was driving without a seatbelt, so police officers attempted to stop him using audible and light signals. He accelerated, however, and continued towards Velika Gorica.
Later, he stopped the car on Rudolfa Fizira Street, not far from the airport named after Croatia's first president. He exited the vehicle and attempted to flee into a nearby wooded area. Police officers caught up with him, forcibly subdued him and brought him to the station in restraints.
A quick drug test showed traces of cocaine and cannabis in his body. He subsequently refused a medical examination and the provision of blood and urine samples for detailed analysis. It was also established that he had never passed a driving test.
Given that he had previously committed more serious traffic violations, officials temporarily seized the vehicle. The court was recommended to impose a sentence of 120 days in prison and a fine of 1,050 euros, and to permanently confiscate the vehicle for the benefit of the state.
The misdemeanour court issued a final judgement: he was sentenced to 50 days in prison unconditionally and a monetary penalty of 750 euros. The BMW was permanently and without compensation seized from him.
