Two young men were seriously wounded in a shooting in central Čakovec. The attacker remains at large and police are conducting an intensive search.

In the early morning hours, a violent altercation broke out in the car park beside a nightclub in central Čakovec, culminating in gunfire. Two young people, aged 22 and 28, sustained serious gunshot wounds. The emergency service transported them to the local hospital, where they received necessary medical care.
According to a report from Index, the entire incident was recorded on a mobile phone by one of those present. The video shows a group of several men and one woman in a fierce altercation. At one point, one of the men pulls out a pistol and fires, after which frightened screaming and the sound of the weapon being reloaded are heard.
Nenad Vidanec, a doctor at Čakovec hospital, described the condition of the injured in detail. The older patient sustained a wound to the lower part of his spine on the right side, whilst the younger was struck in the left thigh and right side of the back. The younger patient underwent surgical intervention during the night and is currently out of danger to life.
Danijel T. is being charged in connection with the attack, according to information published by the portal eMeđimurje. He was born in Sisak and recently moved to Čakovec. Both victims are from Gornje Međimurje. The suspect is known to police from the past due to links with narcotics and has already served prison sentences. It is believed that the reason for the quarrel was the division of money from drug sales.
After fleeing the scene of the crime, the suspect switched off and discarded his mobile phone, which further complicates the search. Despite this, investigators are confident that he will be caught soon. Later in the day, police found the vehicle he had used, although it is not registered in his name. The search focused on the area around Čakovec gymnasium.
Residents of the city have expressed concern about the increasingly pronounced problem with drugs. One of the inhabitants noted that narcotics can easily be obtained. Some citizens claim they have been warning for years about problems linked to the club in front of which this incident occurred. In the vicinity of that location is also situated a care home for the elderly.
