In the early morning hours of Saturday, shortly before 4 a.m., a violent incident occurred on the car park of a establishment in the centre of Čakovec. An unknown man opened fire on two people, who sustained significant injuries. The attacker subsequently fled and has not been apprehended to date.
Officials of the Međimurska Police Directorate have launched a wide-ranging search. In coordination with the prosecutor's office in Varaždin, they are gathering evidence and conducting all legally permissible procedures in order to find and bring the suspect to justice. The prosecutor's office is issuing them with warrants necessary for further investigation.
The suspect is being charged with attempting to kill two people and with endangering the lives and property of others through his actions. Investigators note that they have dealt with this man previously.
Because of the proximity of the Slovenian border and the existence of a green border in that area, police are not ruling out the possibility that the fugitive crossed into the neighbouring country.
For this reason, they have issued a public appeal for assistance. They are calling on citizens to report to them if they know where the suspect is located or if they see him. At the same time, they are warning that for their own safety, they must not approach this man or communicate with him, but should immediately call the police.
