Police in Zadar have arrested a forty-one-year-old driver who demanded five hundred euros from a group of British guests for twenty kilometres. When they objected, she did not let them out of the car at all, but instead continued driving.
The incident occurred in early July. Three passengers – a fifty-three-year-old woman and two of her relatives – boarded her vehicle in Zadar in the evening and requested transport to Privlaka. At their destination, the taxi driver presented them with a bill for five hundred euros. The British woman immediately objected, noting that she had already paid a much smaller amount for the same route earlier that day.
Rather than relent, the driver activated the central locking and continued driving. The foreign guests remained trapped in the back seat, and the woman began to fear for the lives of herself and her family. After realising she had no choice, she paid the demanded money by card. Only then did the driver let them out and drove away.
The next day the woman reported the incident to police. Officers quickly located the suspect and temporarily arrested her. A criminal complaint has been filed against her for unlawful deprivation of liberty and extortion.
