Hostage crisis in Zagreb: man trapped woman on balcony, police broke down door
A man in a Zagreb flat held a woman on a balcony, after which a multi-hour police intervention followed that ended with the arrest of the suspect.
According to a witness account, the drama began this morning, and neighbours had heard the couple arguing earlier. The man locked the woman on to the balcony, from where her screaming could be heard. The woman was shouting to be let back into the flat.
Police initially tried to locate the exact balcony where the trapped person was. That procedure lasted around four hours. Officers called out to the suspect to open the door, which he did not do. After that, a special unit broke down the flat's door.
Emergency services also arrived at the intervention. The man, after his arrest, left the building accompanied by police, and witnesses reported that he was bloodied.
Zagreb police confirmed that two people had been taken to official premises and that a criminal investigation was underway. The details of the incident and motives are still being established.
