Retired General Filipović caused a multi-vehicle collision in Zaprešić while intoxicated, resigned from HDZ
Retired Major General Miljenko Filipović was driving with 1.42 g/kg of alcohol and caused a multi-vehicle collision in Zaprešić. Following the accident, he resigned from the HDZ.
General Filipović with 1.42 g/kg of alcohol caused multi-vehicle collision, one person seriously injured
Retired Major General Miljenko Filipović caused a traffic accident in Zaprešić whilst driving under the influence of alcohol, according to 24sata. Filipović was driving a personal Mitsubishi vehicle with Zagreb registration plates and was travelling on Kalamirovoj Street in a westerly direction.
According to a statement from the Zagreb police, the man, aged 61 — whose identity the police did not publicly release — had 1.42 g/kg of alcohol in his system. At the intersection with Ban Josipa Jelačića Street, he moved into the opposite traffic lane without sufficient distance from the vehicle he was overtaking and collided with a Mercedes driven by an 89-year-old.
"After overtaking, he did not take a position in the traffic lane in which he was travelling before overtaking, for which reason he struck a personal Alfa Romeo vehicle driven by a 56-year-old woman who was travelling on Kalamirovoj Street in an easterly direction," the police stated.
As a result of the collision, the Alfa Romeo was thrown onto the kerb, as was the Mitsubishi, whilst the Mercedes struck a metal waste bin.
One person seriously injured, driver lightly injured
In the accident, the 56-year-old woman was seriously injured and medical assistance was provided at the Clinical Hospital Centre Sestre milosrdnice. Filipović sustained minor injuries and was treated at Clinical Hospital Sveti Duh.
When contacted by 24sata journalists and asked to confirm his involvement in the accident, Filipović responded briefly: "I cannot talk at this moment." When asked if he was well, he added only: "Everything hurts me" — and ended the conversation.
Resignation from HDZ and position in HEP
On the HDZ website, Filipović was listed as chairman of the HDZ Veterans' Community "Gojko Šušak". Following the accident, according to 24sata's findings, he resigned to the party headquarters.
Filipović is also listed on the HEP website as head of the Corporate Security Office.
A retired Major General of the Croatian Armed Forces, originally from Tomislavgrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina, began his military career in the French Foreign Legion. He was one of twelve generals retired by President Stjepan Mesić in 2000.
