Retired HDZ general before prosecutors over drink-driving

Retired general and HDZ official Miljenko Filipović (61) was questioned at the Municipal State Attorney's Office in Novi Zagreb, according to Index.hr. The prosecution has charged him with the criminal offence of causing a traffic accident in road traffic that occurred on 31 August in Zaprešić.

According to the State Attorney's Office, Filipović was driving an automobile with 1.42 per mille of alcohol in his blood that evening. He was driving a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV along Kalamirova Street heading west when, whilst overtaking at a junction with Ulica bana Josipa Jelačića, he hit a Mercedes driven by an 89-year-old.

After the first collision, he did not return to his traffic lane but instead continued driving in the opposite direction. He collided head-on with an Alfa Romeo from which a 56-year-old female driver was coming, who sustained multiple serious bodily injuries and was treated at the Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital.

Filipović complained of injuries following the accident and was taken to the KB Sveti Duh hospital, where he was kept for treatment. Police took charge of him after treatment was completed and handed him to the custody supervisor. Following questioning at the prosecutor's office, a precautionary measure was imposed and his driving licence was temporarily seized.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV from 2020 is owned by the state company HEP, at which Filipović serves as head of the Corporate Security Office. HEP previously confirmed to Index.hr that Filipović, as an employee with special authorisations, had the right to use the vehicle 24 hours a day, including outside working hours.

Following the accident, Filipović submitted his resignation from the position of president of the HDZ Community of Defenders "Gojko Šušak", but remained at the head of HEP's Corporate Security Office.
