An attack that took place during the night of Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 March in the commune of Petite-Rivière-de-l'Artibonite, in Haiti, killed at least 16 people, according to local police. However, according to the United Nations (UN), the number of people who died could reach as high as 80.
This attack, which was probably carried out by a gang called "Gran Grif", is another example demonstrating the severity of insecurity in the country. The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, called on the Haitian people and authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this act.
Bertide Horace, spokesperson for the Commission for Dialogue, Reconciliation and Awareness to Save Latibonit, confirmed that the "Gran Grif" gang is the same one that carried out the attack in an area located in the northwest of Port-au-Prince. She added that other violent acts occurred on Monday morning. According to her, at least 30 people died, dozens of people have gone missing, and several others are injured.
At a press conference, Stéphane Dujarric said the number of people who died could range from 10 to 80. A report from the UN Human Rights Service, published last week, shows that gang violence and attacks against gangs have killed more than 5,500 people in Haiti between March 2025 and mid-January.
Haiti, which is the poorest country in the Americas, has been suffering for years from the violence of criminal gangs. These bandits are committing murder, rape, looting and abduction.
