During the night between Saturday and Sunday, a locality in north-western Haiti was the scene of a violent incursion. Assailants belonging to a criminal group entered Petite-Rivière-de-l'Artibonite, leaving death in their wake. The police authorities in the area reported sixteen deaths in the aftermath of the incident.
However, estimates from international organisations are considerably more alarming. The United Nations has indicated that the number of victims could rise significantly, possibly to as many as eighty people.
This assault occurs within a context of persistent security destabilisation in the country, where armed factions are multiplying abuses against civilian populations.
