The Budapest court has sentenced an Irish national to 14 years' imprisonment for allegedly ending the life of an American woman in a downtown apartment in November 2024. When imposing the sentence, the tribunal ruled that the man shall not set foot on Hungarian soil for ten years after serving his sentence.
The victim, Mackenzie Elizabeth Michalski, came to Hungary from Portland on the western coast of the United States. The woman, who worked as a healthcare assistant, first met M. L. T. in a ruin bar and then went to the man's rented home. In the premises, the defendant bound her, struck her multiple times, and eventually strangled the young tourist. According to the court's reasoning, he abused her at least forty times and strangled her for a minimum of two minutes.
Following the murder, the perpetrator removed evidence, washed the body, and then concealed the victim in a suitcase. He set off towards Lake Balaton in a hired vehicle intending to bury the corpse. Police arrested him two days later, and he admitted his deed during questioning.
The court classified the act as intentional murder, although the prosecution originally alleged manslaughter caused by negligence in the indictment. In delivering the sentence, the court took into account the defendant's clean record and his admission of guilt, but assessed as an aggravating factor that the act damaged Hungary's international reputation.
Both parties appealed against the decision. The defence argues that an incorrect legal classification was made and requested mitigation. The prosecution took time to consider its position. The defendant must also pay 2.5 million forints in court costs.
