16 border crossers detained in Csongrád-Csanád, proceedings launched against human smuggler
Police detained 16 border offenders on 28 July, and criminal proceedings were initiated against a Ukrainian national for human smuggling.
Sixteen border offenders and one human smuggler in a single day
According to information from police.hu, on 28 July 2026, between 0 and 24 hours, police officers on duty detained a total of 16 border offenders across the country.
The detentions took place in Csongrád-Csanád County in four cases, on the administrative territories of Röszke, Ruzsa and Mórahalom. The checked individuals claimed to be nationals of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, but neither their personal identification nor the lawfulness of their stay in Hungary could be credibly substantiated. Police applied escort procedures in accordance with applicable legislation.
In the past 24 hours, criminal proceedings were also initiated in a human smuggling case. In the Lónya region, on 28 July at 07:53 in the morning, patrol officers took action against a Ukrainian national who had helped three Ukrainian individuals cross the green border on foot — none of the three could substantiate their lawful stay in Hungary.
Human smuggling in its basic form is punishable by imprisonment of one to five years, and in aggravated cases by five to fifteen years' imprisonment.
