46 schools threatened with bomb attack by Borsod youth – suspended sentence
The Miskolc Court sentenced a youth to two years and three years suspended imprisonment for sending bomb threat emails to 46 educational institutions.
Bomb threats to 46 schools: final judgment handed down in Miskolc
The Miskolc Court sentenced a Borsod youth to two years and three years suspended imprisonment for committing an act of terrorism and threats, the court's press office announced on Wednesday to MTI. According to Index's report, the defendant was a student at a vocational school in Tiszaújváros in the 2024–2025 school year and continuously absented himself from the institution without authorisation from the end of September.
In January 2025, the youth found online a letter that had previously been used to threaten nearly 300 Hungarian educational institutions with bomb attacks. He decided to send the text to his own school as well. He created various email accounts and at the end of January first sent the threatening message to his own school, then a few days later forwarded it to a further 45 institutions.
As a consequence of the letters, thirty educational institutions had to be evacuated, affecting nearly 2,700 pupils and approximately 300 staff members.
The defendant admitted his guilt at the preparatory hearing and waived his right to trial. In addition to the suspended imprisonment, the court ordered probation supervision during the probation period.
The court assessed as an aggravating circumstance that the act affected a large number of institutions, caused public outrage and disturbed public order. As mitigating factors, it took into account the young man's admissions, remorse, age, and poor mental state resulting from his difficult family circumstances.
