A man from Algyo has been arrested on suspicion of setting more than 50 fires in Csongrád-Csanád county over a period of one and a half months. The Szeged District Court has ordered his pre-trial detention for one month.

The Szeged District Court has ordered pre-trial detention for one month for a man from Algyo, whom authorities suspect of deliberately setting more than 50 fires across the county over the past one and a half months, the Szeged District Prosecutor's Office announced to the szeged365.hu editorial staff.
According to the reasonable suspicion, the man deliberately set fire for the first time on 16 August at the rear of a car dealership's premises on the outskirts of Szeged. Due to dry weather conditions, the flames spread extremely rapidly, reaching the company's building and several of its vehicles, causing damage worth several million forints. Firefighters who arrived at the scene had to keep a gas container continuously cooled to prevent an explosion.
According to the suspicion, the man subsequently set fires near numerous other settlements in the county until his arrest by police, in a total of more than 50 instances.
In the proceedings initiated for the offence of endangering public safety and further criminal offences, the prosecutor's office requested pre-trial detention on three grounds: the risk of flight and concealment, the risk of obstruction of criminal proceedings, and the risk of reoffending. The court, granting the prosecutor's motion, ordered one month's pre-trial detention. Both the prosecutor's office and the defence acknowledged the ruling, thus it became final.
