Overturned furniture, chairs thrown into the pond – rampage at Bikás Park
In the early morning of Whit Sunday, workers at the catering establishments in Bikás Park discovered signs of severe vandalism as they arrived for opening – according to Index. Overturned tables, scattered potted flowers and chairs thrown into the nearby pond greeted them. The night had been calm and windless, so a storm was not behind the destruction.
One of the affected catering establishments posted images and video of the damage on its Facebook page, and also confirmed that a man on a rampage had torn through the area. The venue was unable to open on time, but according to an update to the post, staff worked at full speed on cleaning and repairs, and managed to open by noon.
The Budapest Police Headquarters press office told Index that police officers arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. on 25 May 2026 following a report, where they apprehended a man. Emergency services personnel took the individual to hospital. The XI District Police Precinct initiated criminal proceedings for property damage and is investigating all the circumstances of the incident.
According to Index's information, the early morning report originally related to a different event: the man, who appeared to be suffering from mental health problems, behaved aggressively in the area and came into conflict with pedestrians. The proprietor of the catering establishment made their own report only in the morning hours – but by that time the man had already been placed under psychiatric treatment.
In response to what happened, the affected catering establishment issued a statement: "This incident is a painful reminder that we cannot pass by in silence on the issue of mental health. Let us take care of ourselves, look out for one another, and be patient with those who live around us – we can never know what inner struggle someone might be fighting."
