Care workers may have assaulted mobility-impaired patient at Jahn Ferenc Hospital – police investigate
Budapest police have opened a criminal investigation for attempted grievous bodily harm in connection with an incident at the emergency department of Jahn Ferenc South Pest Hospital.
Suspected assault at Jahn Ferenc Hospital emergency department
According to nepszava.hu, a 55-year-old mobility-impaired woman from Ócsai may have been assaulted by care workers at the emergency department of Jahn Ferenc South Pest Hospital – the case became public following her husband's report to police.
The patient was brought to hospital in mid-May with symptoms of breathlessness after falling ill at home. Life-saving surgery was performed on her to clear her airways. Two days after the procedure, her husband took photographs of his wife showing red and purple marks and bruises on her back.
It was then that he was first able to speak meaningfully with his wife, who told him she had asked the care workers to help her get to the bathroom. Her husband recounted to RTL News what happened next:
"She didn't get help, poor dear, she unfortunately wet herself. And when they were changing her, they threw her at the bed, hit her shoulder and back with their fists, assaulted her, because she had wet herself and needed to be cleaned. They treated her in an inhuman manner."
The man filed a complaint at the hospital, but received no substantive response. He subsequently made a report to the police.
The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) stated that a criminal investigation has been opened on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm; no suspect has been questioned so far. In response to enquiries from RTL News, the hospital stated that it immediately launched an internal investigation following the report and would not provide further information until it is concluded. According to the channel's information, the authorities have also seized camera recordings from the hospital.
