The Association for Civil Liberties (TASZ) has turned to authorities to initiate criminal proceedings, as numerous citizens reported on election day that they had been placed on a national minority list without their permission – according to reporting by Economx following Index.
Complaints flooded in to the civil rights advocates. The majority of those affected became aware of the situation only when they were already in the polling booth and discovered they could only vote for minority candidates, not party lists. According to the submissions, the most such entries were made to the Roma minority register. This register experienced sharp growth twice in March, ultimately reaching forty-four thousand people.
The TASZ documented that free food packages were distributed at multiple locations during the election campaign. The organisers were connected to the ORÖ and the government side. To receive the packages, people were often required to disclose personal information. According to the civil rights group, fraudsters could have used this information to submit false applications to the competent authorities.
According to the organisation's data, more than ten thousand people were registered on the basis of power of attorney during the campaign months. This suggests that their personal data was handled unlawfully and false documents were submitted in their names.
