A middle-aged man from Tolna county, subject to a driving ban and in a state of intoxication, hit a police officer who attempted to stop him. The officer sustained serious injuries.

On the evening of 9 July, a middle-aged resident of Tolna county hit a police officer with his vehicle in Kaposszekcsőn whilst drunk and subject to a valid driving ban. The officer had attempted to conduct an identity check and the driver fled the scene without stopping. According to information from the Central Prosecution Office, the victim sustained serious injuries.
One of the patrol officers, wearing a high-visibility jacket and standing in the middle of the road, attempted to stop the vehicle using a service lamp. According to the allegation, the driver noticed the official but did not slow down, instead drove directly towards the officer and continued without braking. He then went into hiding from the authorities.
The attacked officer's colleague called an ambulance and requested assistance in locating the perpetrator. The man was apprehended the following day – public cooperation contributed to this. The Kaposvár Regional Investigation Prosecutor's Office took him into custody and questioned him as a suspect.
The charges include multiple serious counts: attempted manslaughter of an official, drunk driving, and driving whilst banned by court order. The man had already been convicted of drunk driving in January of this year, when he received a fine and a two-year driving ban.
The Kaposvár District Court ordered one month's detention on 13 July, Monday. According to the court, the risk of absconding and the commission of further crimes justified the measure. The detainee gave witness testimony, and the prosecutor is still evaluating his defence.
