Drew weapon, then caught near Békéscsaba

A traffic dispute escalated into an armed threat on the Békés County section of the M44 motorway, according to police.hu. The incident occurred on Friday, 2 October, in the evening, when one driver braked sharply and without justification twice in front of the vehicle behind him.

Forced to slow down, the other driver moved into the outer lane, after which the two vehicles drove alongside one another. An argument ensued, and the driver who had performed the braking manoeuvre brandished a weapon in the direction of the other motorist. The person affected stopped at the nearest service area and notified police.

Several police units were immediately deployed to the motorway. Officers on motorcycles from the Békés County Police Headquarters Traffic Control Unit stopped the suspect near Békéscsaba, and their colleagues brought him to Békéscsaba Police Headquarters. The man was not alone: his wife and two children were travelling in the vehicle with him.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the Budapest man on suspicion of the offence of endangering traffic, and he was detained. He is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. He currently has no driving licence – his previous point balance had reached 18 points, which led to its revocation – so administrative proceedings were also initiated against him for driving without a licence. The seized weapon was a rubber projectile firearm. No personal injury occurred, although the danger was present. Police are continuing to investigate the details and circumstances of the incident.
