The Budapest Metropolitan Court has sentenced a 27-year-old Budapest resident to a suspended prison sentence of six months to one year, as he sent threatening letters to several law-enforcement authorities in early 2024, reported Origo.
On 15 January 2024, the man wrote to the National Police Headquarters (ORFK), the Rapid Response Police and several district police stations. He demanded that the Counter-Terrorism Centre (TEK) send people to his address and claimed that he possessed firearms and ammunition.
He subsequently sent messages to the Vác and Győr police headquarters, in which he wrote about blowing up Vienna's main railway station. The letters contained statements such as "tonight I will set the city on fire", "I will blow up the entire city – Allahu Akbar", and "I am planning a terror attack in the name of Hamas".
At trial, the defendant cited autism and ADHD. He called the messages harmless but stated that he regretted what he had done.
The court found him guilty of the felony of threatening with terrorism on three counts. A psychiatric expert confirmed that the man suffers from autism and was in a pathological mental state at the time of commission, but this did not exclude criminal responsibility.
The court took into account his clean criminal record, his admission of guilt, the lengthy period of compulsory measures and his mental disorders. An aggravating factor was the multiple threats.
Probationary supervision was ordered for the duration of the suspended sentence, and he was ordered to pay court costs of 1.3 million forint. The judgment is not final, as both parties requested a three-day period for consideration.
