Capital Prosecutor's Office Investigates Complaint Against Suspicion of István Szakács
The Capital Prosecutor's Office is investigating influencer István Szakács's complaint against suspicion. The police questioned him on Wednesday for threatening to commit terrorism.
Prosecutor's Office Verifies Legality of Suspicion
The Capital Prosecutor's Office issued a statement regarding former prominent influencer István Szakács – according to 24.hu. The police brought in the Fidesz-aligned opinion leader in Győr on Wednesday morning, who is suspected by the Rapid Response Police National Investigation Bureau of the crime of threatening to commit a terrorist act. Szakács was released the same day and subsequently gave a telephone statement to the publication.
The proceedings are based on a video message that Szakács posted at the end of June 2026. In it, addressing Magyar Péter, he said that if Viktor Orbán were arrested, five hundred thousand Hungarians would take to the streets and "from anywhere, no matter who stands against us" would free the prime minister.
Szakács told 24.hu: "I have not committed a crime: as an influencer I may perhaps express myself somewhat extremely, but of course I did not intend to break into any prison by force."
The Investigating Authority Acted Independently
According to the prosecutor's statement, the Rapid Response Police National Investigation Bureau notified the Capital Prosecutor's Office in writing on 3 July 2026 of the decision to launch an investigation – the Criminal Procedure Act makes this mandatory for the investigating authority in every case.
On 7 July, the police informed the prosecutor's office by telephone that it was conducting a search at Szakács's premises, bringing him in, and questioning him as a suspect. The competent prosecutor verbally warned the investigating authority: "the matter must be investigated with particular thoroughness to determine whether the given conduct truly realises the relevant statutory facts of the Criminal Code."
The statement emphasises that under the Criminal Procedure Act, during the investigative phase the investigating authority acts independently, prosecutorial approval is not necessary for assessing the substantiation of suspicion, and no such approval was given in this case. The police therefore decided in their own authority to carry out questioning as a suspect.
Complaint Lodged with the Prosecutor's Office
Szakács lodged a complaint against the suspicion but was not taken into custody. The complaint and case files arrived at the Capital Prosecutor's Office from the police on Wednesday morning.
When reviewing the complaint, the prosecutor's office will be in a position to assess the legality of the suspicion – according to the statement, which notes that the prosecutor's office will inform the public about the outcome of the review.
